Sometimes that doesn't work as the box has the serial number as the same as the product. Example my friend tried this with a playstation and essentially got caught.
A lot of chain stores have started to also require some form of ID with returns so that they can see if you're a serial returner and may refuse the item if they think you're one of those people that buy and wear clothes for a party and then return them the next day.
