With all the DLC being released for the game, I could see Nintendo releasing a ‘Tournament Edition’ of the game that included all the downloadable content and all custom moves unlocked. Essentially a GOTY edition with tournament friendly features included.

That would be pretty good, although with the nature of the storytelling, you would almost need to list specific events, then mention what game they are mentioned in.
If it’s a strict timeline, the order of games should be,

VLR is a stand alone game, but it does contain spoilers for 999. If you ever intend to play 999, play it before you play VLR. At the very least, watch a playthrough of it.
