Wouldn't surprise me if the agreement made the trademark cancellation "free" for legal and marketing reasons, but the domain names being transferred took a cash settlement.
Cruise control. Pretty standard these days, but a lot of compacts and pickups still have trim levels that don't include it. I always go for the lowest trim level that has cruise.

Europe is a local market for VW, so that's not really a fair comparison. The US is the largest non-local market that the two companies share, and VW is getting stomped.
They are cars for teenage gearheads, not just any teenager. The 944 IS easy to work on, though I don't really agree with them being reliable. Parts are still plentiful and, while more than common cars, not crazy expensive. I would say the 944 would be a good car for the most gearheaded of teenagers.

The engine does sound like a nightmare waiting to happen, but the AWD is really just two separate drivetrains for the front and rear. Electric motors tend to be quite reliable, so it may just be the super/turbo engine that will be bad.
