Under “Navigation” in Settings, there is an option to “Reduce difficult intersections”, but it’s not perfect.
Have you enabled the “Reduce difficult intersections” option? That’s supposed to reduce these kinds of directions.

As a fellow PhD in biophysics I can assure you that I understand the trials and tribulations involved in getting things published. It sucks when things you work on don’t get published, for whatever reasons.
