Why save the Junkie (Nick)? Strand indicated that Nick’s lifestyle (druggie) forces him to be very proficient at getting the things that he needs (scoring drugs). So Strand thought this would be a useful skill to have in an ally.

Same goes with food. Every once in a while I’ll eat a meal (Hamburger Helper, or Hot Pockets) that I loved 10 or 20 years ago. Only to be bitterly disappointed that these foods really taste like shit.

He also has The Long Utopia coming out in a couple months. This is part of a series of books he coauthored with Stephen Baxter, called the Long Earth series. This series does a fantastic job with the multiverse idea. One of my favorite series.
