I am guessing the cost of the higher octane is less than a penny per gallon, the only reason why the higher grades cost more is the market will bear the cost. Will more volume on the higher octane lower prices? Who knows.
That cheap if it breaks. That thrifty if it doesn’t. If you have the skillset for fixing something again when it breaks, not the end of the world. That said, my preference is the best battery on the junker, and remanufactured or new for an alternator.

Index fund: Can create enough wealth to pay for Ferrari of choice, and money left over to retire, if you start young, and fund properly. Still, a car can be pretty sweet. Harder to justify when the money could be worth much more at retirement.
