I just think that Missing Richard Simmons getting shit on seems strange. Richard Simmons disappearance from public life was notable, and the outstanding questions about it interesting. That being said, I felt the majority of the podcast was a reevaluation of what Richard Simmons meant culturally, and in that sense,

I don't understand the consensus that Missing Richard Simmons is sensational and exploitive trash while Serial is the height of podcast journalism.

The investigation is handled by a group of detectives, as a result, you are spending short amounts of time with multiple characters, so you are right that there isn't deep characterization but I do think the authors provide enough to make these characters individuals. The ending is really good. The movie version with

The Laughing Policeman is a classic. I'd recommend finishing it.

I read the first one and didn't like it. Too fantastical and I thought the writing wasn't that great, but a lot of other people like the series.

He's also the most acclaimed living author in Japan, so he's pretty highly rated in the east, too.

Kafka on the Shore would be my recommendation.
