3 Guys with only axes have no chance against 4 player armed with guns. As far as the whole "just log out" thing goes that doesn't happen often because people love the player encounters like these. If those guy that were being held up really wanted they could have just logged but they chose not to.
There's an art to designing a good user interface. Some companies, like Netflix, Apple and Google, know this. I get the impression Valve...doesn't. At least not all the time.
