You are right about the weight savings, and the axial loads; however, helical gears can actually handle even higher loads than straight cut gears of the same diameter and thickness (because if they are both of the same overall thickness, the linear distance of the base of each tooth is always going to be greater on a

Mechanical Engineer, here. That is a common misconception, but no. In fact, straight-cut gears are actually weaker, on a tooth-by-tooth basis, compared to a helical-cut gear of the same overall thickness.

That’s like saying you shouldn’t fall in love, because whoever you fall in love with could possibly die, any day.

Really? Wow. I Never would have guessed so many people actually liked those. One of my cars came with it from the factory, and I actually went to the trouble of removing it, because I feel that they are a huge eyesore. Clear glass is infinitely more attractive, in my opinion. Just.. cleaner looking.

One gigantic oversight here is that “normal” people don’t even know that driving shoes are a thing, and wouldn’t be able to pick them out of a line up if asked. They just look a little odd, if anything.

This is a perfectly reasonable and accurate statement. I’m glad we could bring this discussion to an amicable conclusion.

Well, it started this discussion. I apologize if it isn’t as interesting to you as the last one you were able to start in this manner.

There are obviously numerous other 30-year old, lightweight, RWD coupes. What I am trying to say is none of them are really all that similar to an RX-7 in the way they drive. That is not to say that the RX-7 is better than the other options; its just different. So if David Tracy has become smitten with RX-7's, and

Are you kidding me? It is the week of the Superbowl. Do you really think he is following the news cycle right now?!

That is much more comparable in weight. Unfortunately though, a 240z in reasonable condition these days is, for some reason, fetching wild amounts of money. The RX’s don’t seem to have as high of demand, so they can regularly be found for under $5000.

I would think it would be dozens of times more fun, and engaging.

I will never understand how people actually think the Ford grill looks indistinguishably similar to an Aston Martin grill.

You should suggest a car that is at least in some way comparable to the driving experience of an original RX-7. Both of those are fat, heavy pigs compared to a svelte 2,300 lb RX!

Multiple people of the exact same height can have wildly different torso lengths. I am sincerely sorry to hear that you did not fit comfortably in such a desirable vehicle; however, that does not necessarily mean that others who are of a similar or greater height won’t either. People should still find out for

This makes me happy. I am so sick of hearing people cite “traffic” as a lame-ass excuse for driving something that lacks that wonderful third pedal.

Oh wow, you’re completely right. I had forgotten what had happened immediately before and after, but the context makes it so much better.

As a Bills fan, I know all too well how historically great Tom Brady is. I always hear people say that the Patriots aren’t as good as they seem, and that they just get to take advantage of being in a division with bad teams, but that is a huge misconception.

This is a commonly-held belief; however, PFF did a fascinating write-up back in 2014 explaining that this is actually a terrible misconception. They looked at the three non-division leaders of every division, for every season dating back to 2000, and found that the AFC East is actually the toughest division in

Believe me; I know. I was actually one of the people arguing that it should be pronounced like the word “gift” but without the “t.”

Oh, my mistake. Glad to hear it is being discussed.
