Thank you for the insightful response. Right now I have a whole life and term life policy. The term life is convertible in the future. I got both policies while I am still in good health which made underwriting easy at the time.

So why should I (31 years old) buy term life insurance instead of whole/universal life insurance? Term life insurance feels like I'm throwing money down the drain where with whole life insurance the policy doesn't expire, earns dividends, and has guaranteed death benefits and cash values.
