Monopolies invariably promote abuse. Government-monopolized services are no exception.

The State is their god, and the police and judges alike are among its priesthood. Show your proper respect, genuflect and tithe as demanded, or the inquisition will kill you.

The guy paid for a flight. What he paid for was taken from him after the fact. That is fraud on the part of the airline, not an exercise of property rights.

1. Airlines are very heavily regulated by government now, and this occurred anyway.

2. Competition is heavily restricted by the government now, preventing consumer choice.

2. No one who sees this wants to fly United now, representing the natural regulatory effect of the market.
