If  you “grew up” watching Lord of the Rings? Jesus. I was in my 20s when they came out! Old. Old. So old.

I wasted dozens of hours on this site in the years prior to the Hulk Hogan Gawker lawsuit, and now only sporadically check it out. Nothing would make me happier than to see the AV Club make a return to form.

Since many of the posters here (me included) are often criticizing the writing on the site, it’s worth saying -- this review is very well written.

I don’t know that this recap of West’s career is totally accurate - unless you’re in the vocal “it’s boring” camp, House of the Devil is a major improvement on the 80s movies it’s riffing - the slow pace and long pauses increase the tension, rather than padding the runtime. As much as I love X, it’s also a clever

Prometheus (and Covenant to a lesser extent) are maligned unfairly, and to a ridiculous degree. When I hear an ostensible Alien(s) fan bad-mouthing them, what I hear is simply, “It’s not Aliens, so I don’t like it, so I’m going to make up reasons I don’t like it.” And it’s always people who prefer Aliens to Alien.

I can only think of one other show (Halt and Catch Fire) that only gets better episode by episode all the way to the finale. It’s hard to commit- but this may be my favorite show of all time. I can’t think of any other that has stuck with me in every way after finishing it. It can bring back those initial emotions

Even if you wrote that film about the same issues, I’m pretty sure Berlin itself is as much a character in that film as anyone esle and that unique feel of that city in that postwar time is not something a new film can capture.

That’s completely different. Dune was not Lynch’s creation, and the Villeneuve version may have taken some influence from it here and there but it is a distinct new adaptation of a novel. Remaking Possession is like remaking Eraserhead or Mulholland Drive. Sure, you could try, but what is the fucking point??

I would tell them: go ahead, try remaking it. Let’s see how it develops. If they are brave enough to have the idea of remaking such a weird one with such a history in its production, go full in, let’s see what they’ve got.

I could weep for this planet sometimes.

I don’t know, outside of missing the shot at the beginning and being wrong about some of the estimates that he made (how long it would take someone to die and something else) he pretty effortlessly dispatches several people and only has one real fight on his hands. It was an odd movie.

Where’s the entry for “Everyone Not Named John Wick” in John Wick 1-4?

Been years since I saw A Fish Called Wanda, and Ken (Michael Palin) isn’t an actual hitman, but he just can’t seem to kill that old lady....

No wonder Robert Shaw hated him. He knew what was up back in 1974!

It’s great to be back in a bar band, baby.

(Sincerely, thank you! Delighted that new management has made it possible.)

saw it last night and it’s the best hemsworth has ever been in a movie. completely weaponizes all of his best traits.

It’s good to see you again and have you back Jesse! Miss your writing and commentary.
