One of the problems comes in defining "casual." Even when grabbing a casual game with a stranger at your local shop, you usually still need to agree on a format. So if that format is Standard, you can't just sit on one deck indefinitely.
That was a big reason I quit in high school. And, in fact, when I got back into the game as an adult, the financial upkeep was a big reason why I eventually transitioned out of Standard (which requires keeping up with rotations and a constantly changing metagame) to Legacy, which is much more stable.
My favorite bug I've found was when a heavily-armored guy wielding a heavy machine gun just started walking up-hill into the sky. Eventually, a pack of wolves came to surround him, but couldn't reach up to his invisible gun perch.

The Alpha Tropical Island is nothing to scoff at. So the second-most valuable card in that pack is worth a couple thousand dollars.
As to the WHY 3 mana for free is good - usually, you play one land per turn, and you can use each land once per turn to generate a mana.
