It will kill SMS once your phone plan is pure data with no separation for "minutes" and "texting" plans, but at that point it's already dead. I myself prefer to use gTalk over SMS. This is mainly because my convos from my laptop and my phone will have one continuous timeline vs half of my convos on SMS.
