Just to be clear though, none of these services require you to keep them for a length of time, right?  One thing I like about HBO Now is I can pay for it for a month or two, catch up on things I wanted to see and drop them again for a while.

This is very common with electronics.  If you ever bought an office printer that is sold in multiple speeds or capabilities, those are often just settings in software.  Easier to manufacture one model that can do everything and then just change features with software than make multiple models.
