The big question is what kind of wear does that introduce to the system vs charging it?

The train would still have a big energy debt it would have to make up.  But if that becomes the process than its possible to correct for that with additional energy generation onboard.

I just want to point out that, for the I’m sure essentially nonexistent cross-section of people who own tow trucks and Teslas, that this is far less efficient than just plugging the car in. 

this is like charging a battery using solar power from an incandescent light bulb...   coal power is way more efficient than that.

The difference between your example and this one is that someone noticed something NEW after you raced and protested the NEW information. Do we really think the organizers/stewards/judges/etc were unaware someone was in an EV?

Because of this, racing was just added to official list (at no. 2133) of things I now hate. It’s right after the word/phrase “beast mode”.
