It matters because their entire business model revolves around profiting off of a service they say they don’t provide which allows them to illegally avoid paying for things that other businesses in the space have to pay.
They get better jobs. We fix the bad parts of the economy to make them fair and equitable. Shrugging your shoulders and saying “Well, it’s better than having no job” is a bullshit cop out answer.
But then what happens to the people who actually do this for a living? Personally I don’t use Uber because they treat their workers like crap. But many people do and many work for them as well.
Because the people who don’t do the work pocket a minimum of 25% of the profits while doing virtually nothing.
But we can certainly stop doing it. Serfdom, indentured servitude, and slavery have all largely been eliminated. The gig economy can go the same way.
It’s definitely bad news. The entire gig economy model takes labor exploitation into a stratospheric new level.
Please, please, please, please, let this happen. The gig economy is crushing people.
