I don’t think there is any implication of weeding out the idiots. These people took an extremely ignorant risk with their money. They deserve to no longer have that money. There is a social contract to work for the best of everyone, but not to be drug down with the worst of them.

Part of me says some of these idiots deserve what they get, and that is absolutely true.

I don’t know what other games you are planning to pick up, but if you are a frugal gamer, Nintendo games rarely ever get discounts beyond $10 or so.  So for me, its never really worth waiting for to buy their games.  But most other publishers drop price within a month or two.

Your metaphor falls apart because you chose to buy gas while watching ads. The players bought the game months, maybe over a year ago and are just now being served ads. The transaction was one game for x dollars, no ads included. Now many months later one party decides they would like to change the original terms.

It seems to me that a big reason the Switch gets so many indies is the smaller scale of the titles goes well with the handheld aspect.  These are bite size games meant to be played in small spurts.  Add that to a huge userbase that gets about 4 or 5 big titles from Nintendo per year and then looks to fill in the gaps…
