4th of July is pretty much the only date that is phrased that way. It is becoming more common to hear people simply say July 4th, but it's still about 50/50.

Well, when we speak a date, we say "December 7th, 2011". So when we abbreviate it, we keep it in the same order. It's simple and effective, and has nothing to do with the metric or the imperial measurement system. But thanks for the broad assumption anyway. I can only assume that you have bad teeth and body odor.
