It's really just a matter of the referee's discretion. My guess is that the referee interpreted the play as "unsporting conduct" which the laws of the game (see Law 12: Fouls and Misconduct) say should be punished by a yellow card. I was at the USA Ghana game in 2006. The amount of time-wasting they do faking injuries (as they did in 2010 as well) is most likely the most unsporting thing I've ever witnessed from a professional athlete.
