In slight fairness to Ms. Fox, the schedule for actors in movies tends to be pretty tough. They routinely work more than 12 hours a day with almost no breaks and often have to live on-location for shooting. Working such hours can be hard when you have a little kid at home.

That was my first thought as well. If he's raised his kids to be accepting and open-minded, and if they spend a lot of time around people who are of the same mindset, then of course they're much less likely to be homophobic. I'm guessing Hawke's knowledge of kids today mainly comes from his kids and friends of his kids who just based on where they live and the industry their father's in may not be the most representative sample in terms of what homophobia might be out there.
