If we’ve learned anything from Teach For America, it’s that we should be making it much easier to become a teacher at first and firing the bad ones rapidly.

State law (that only applies to Chicago) does not allow the CTU to strike for anything but compensation and benefits. So rejecting the proposed wage increase is the only way that they can keep the critical issues on the table.

CPS teachers are fucking heroes. It is beyond clear by what they’re specifically asking for that they are doing this for their students, not for themselves. Yes they’re asking for pay raises, but those were already on the table and public school teachers are drastically underpaid everywhere in this country anyways.

I am a CPS parent and I say, give them what they want. I would go further and cap charter school growth (which I believe they did in LA) - they perpetuate the segregation and they take public funds while not being held accountable to the public for results or proper spending. Rahm’s expansion of UNO charters, CPS

I tutored public school kids in an afterschool program, and holy crap, we need to just poor all of the money into the public school system. They charge me 7c for a plastic bag and sales tax is 10%, even on food, they can find the money.

Three problems here.

It’s not like it’s some voluntary decision.  It’s how well a teacher’s union is able to negotiate a contract.  Looks like they weren’t able to get this in negotiations.

Hi everyone! I just got home from a high school football game, and honestly, it’s one of the simplest, nicest pleasures of any week. Just sitting outside, hanging out with my one friend and watching her daughter cheer. It was a little chilly today but still not cold, thank goodness. Now I’m home, having a glass of

This made my day

Wow! I have never made it this early! I’m an overworked middle school teacher who really enjoys reading about the lives of all the fabulous people on Jezebel. I look forward to getting to read about your worlds.

I don’t post much to these, but I appreciate them and read them every week. I follow many of you. Today was rough. I’m a single mom now, and work very hard, and I do a lot with my kids. Today my son told me that he was embarrassed that I clapped and shouted during his soccer game. My daughter pouted and got dramatic

My friend is a professional make-up artist and she did such an amazing thing for me this week: She showed me how to start applying make-up, and it made me feel so beautiful! I’m still too daunted by the task to do anything myself aside from the most basic look so she prettied me up properly, we both agreed that we

Um I wait all week for the shelter cat update just like everybody else :) Thank you all so much for having me!

I hope you’re doing this under your doctor’s care ...

Yesterday morning, courtesy of my narcissistic witch mother and rotten sister, I woke up to seven missed calls from my dad’s cell, and a pile of increasingly frantic (and annoyed, TBH) texts from my sister, saying some variation of “mom and dad think you’re dead because you never call them so you need to call them

Someone dressed a Pomeranian dog as Paddington Bear...and now the world seems a slightly better place to be in than it did yesterday

Nice pivot there. Dogs could hear your whistle miles away.

They’re all a bunch of phony cunts.

I am okay with this but also wish a greater discussion was still taking place on how richER people do this, have done this, and will probably still do this by buying buildings and endowments. At the same time “student” athletes, who are overwhelmingly black and brown, are being exploited without compensation and no

No. I’ve given this quite a bit of thought- be we need to know who the predators are. We need to know about their backgrounds, their history, their pattern. So that we know what to look out for. Not publishing names and background information of murderers is sticking our heads in the sand. And yes, we need to talk
