No, they are probably favorited, and it won’t let you merge favorited characters. Any character you get 4 stars or higher is automatically favorited, so you have to manually unfavorite them before you can merge.

I think the logic behind it is suppose to be that the reach of a lance gives it an advantage over the sword. The weight and power of the axe would break the thinness of the lance, and the durability and speed of the sword gives it an advantage over the heavy and slower axe.
