Was pulling into Arby’s a couple years back. Two SUVs are pulling out of opposite sides of that parking lot backing straight into each other. I am with some people from work. Seeing the impending crash we honk and wave. Both cars stop briefly, then continue backing into each other and collide.
That was requiem for a dream-like.
Agreed. Pictures tell an opposite story: meant to put it in reverse, but put it in drive instead.

They anticipated the car moving forward, and when the car moved backward it basically pushed their foot further into the accelerator. They then likely panicked.
More than most people will ever know.
The Reverse lock on my Miata requires you to press the lever down to go left past of 1st. But it doesn’t take much force to accidentally go into reverse when you meant to go into 1st, at least from a stop. I’m pretty sure there’s a more robust lockout when the car is moving at speed.
Anyone miss the good old days before the internet and social media when teenagers did stupid stuff like this and only a few people ever knew?

Could you crap yourself hard enough while you’re in your car to total it? Because if someone was driving across that bridge, that’s what they did.
I was once forced to take shelter from a tornado .under an overpass on the KS turnpike. Back then (before cellphone warnings), it was possible to get caught by surprise like that. I was driving a semi, lightly loaded, and the tornado was heading towards me from the side. Most of the 4-wheelers on the highway that day…
