Hands down it was Star Ocean for me.  New and nostalgic for the 16bit era at the same time.  It was just the Goldilocks of games, just right.

The first I heard of this trope was “The Legend of Bagger Vance”.  It certainly wasn’t the first, but it absolutely ticks every single box.
