In or about 1994 I had the chance to buy one (read: I saw it for sale and wanted it real bad). I think the price was about $4,000. To my teenage eye it looked good. My dad didn’t even bother to drive past it it take a look with me, he just laughed, and laughed, and then laughed some more.

Can’t say this is anything new, just updated methods. My first car would have cost me $20 to fail inspection at a legit place, or $40 in cash at my dad’s buddy’s shop to pass. (Not so) weirdly, same place my mom would get bootleg VHS Disney movies before they came out in theaters.
