Spaniard (from Madrid) here. Sorry to butt in, but maybe you’ll find this helpful. My answer isn’t meant to be snarky or condescending or sarcastic, but here it is: Barcelona “is very Spanish” because ... it’s in Spain. (I didn’t even mean for it to sound tautological!)

Nope. Until the separatists manage to claw themselves out of Spain, Gasol is technically - literally! legally! - Spanish. And, like, good luck with that. It’s more accurate in my view to say that he’s Spanish and, within that, Catalan. Or just Spanish and Catalan.

I don’t think I’ve ever made a Kinja comment, but this deserves one and much love, too. I’m neither white (well, fully), nor a woman, but I share your frustration these days. I have a lot of “it’s really easy for well-off liberal white folk to just throw their hands up and walk away” kinda days.
