I grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood. In junior high - the height of body awkwardness - was when I first realized my ass was larger than everyone else’s. I used to squeeze my cheeks together (like someone would squeeze their stomach in for a picture) thinking that would hide my derriere. Fortunately, in

On the flip side, I’m a Black woman without much ass and I’ve been made fun of for it constantly, often by other Black people BECAUSE I don’t fit that mold. On black-ish, the teen daughter Zoe makes a comment about how a boy broke up with her because she had no booty. That’s totally happened to me. And remember Martin

She’s a black woman, discussing a subject that’s a problem with the way society views black women, and how that effects how they view themselves. I don’t think the problem here is her failing to recognize her privilege, I think the problem is that you’re missing the point of the article.

Lol is this really for me? My first comment chewing me out for not being a Real Feminist! Thrilling.

Add “nappy hair” and “brown skin” and you’ll be celebrating with my black ass in 2017. I spent decades with those three things NOT being “en vogue”.

Body image is so freaking complicated. I am old enough to remember “you can never be too rich or too thin.” I have never been thin. I thought I was completely at terms with my thick legs and big butt, but I just found out that I am going to a conference in LA next month, and I am suddenly bothered that I will be fat

Your reply is so necessary. Wow. Trying to bring intersectionality into the discussion because people seem to think that it’s unacceptable for black women to have specific issues with their body that are directly related to their status as black women, and you have really proved a POINT with your snark. I am blown

Her face looks super weird. Like a real doll or wax figure. It’s the angle? And the make up. I feel like someone went bananas with the contouring on the sides of her nose. She is beautiful, and her face is really striking and recognizable and this looks almost like a mask of her face.

Uh... She’s merely the Emmy-winning lead actress in one of ABC’s biggest hit shows. That’s all.

That’s not the takeaway I got from this at all. I took away that it took her a long time to accept/be okay with her body. I didn’t get at all that she was saying she’s struggled with being slightly less thin than other people.

“A good friend of mine, Tracee Ellis Ross. . . “

She’s talking about her ass, which black women have been mocked and degraded for having, for decades. We have been hyper sexualized as CHILDREN because of it. It was a mark of such embarrassment for many of us growing up, and I absolutely include myself in that. I was overly concerned with the way my butt moved too

It’s a touch deeper than that...

Some people hate happy.

True fact: His house was on my brother-in-laws delivery round when he was a postman and he would wave and call out “Hello Mr. Postman” whenever he saw him.

It’s performative. I mean, there are people who legitimately hate Coldplay, but repeatedly loudly declaring your hate for Coldplay is about showcasing how cool and cultured and totally not bourgeois you are.

Same with Nickelback - they wouldn’t be my first choice to listen to, but when you’ve got all these people defending an actual abusive ass like Chris Brown this week? I’ll go with the non abusive dudes who make generic music and sound like they are nice guys.

I’ve never gotten the Chris Martin/Coldplay vitriol. I mean, I don’t care about their music, but the hatred that it gets baffles me.

I would happily go to a Wonka-themed party. I bet the food was great.

Oh how can you not like Chris Martin? He’s like a giant puppy, he was so excited to be playing next to Beyonce at the Superbowl that I wanted to cuddle him.
