I think they did this because they wanted combos to be easy, and rather than the long winded button variations found in SSF, a simple Back Back Forward Punch could be three

The show is targeting very young girls who like Ponies. However, because the show isn't paint-by-numbers (like say Dora, or Sid the Science Kid), they realize they have an audience of youth / early teens who can actually follow the story.
