Good call, thanks!
Good call, thanks!
Hm, I guess I'll have to consider jumping back in. I bailed mid-way through the first arc. I don't know if this is blasphemous but I miss the Manapul/Buccellato run. (Part of the reason, BTW, may be that I wasn't really reading as much during the original West era. Would welcome any suggestions on where/how to catch…
Possible spoiler: there actually isn't a Snyder arc on Batman that surpasses The Black Mirror. I kept waiting for it too, and - while I did enjoy his run for a while and I was awestruck by Capullo - I just don't think that was the direction he took. I've no idea if it was because he felt pressure to make the book a…
Excellent tip, thanks!
100% co-sign this. (That said, I really would like to latch on to some of the other titles in the Valiant universe too. Just haven't been quite able to find one that sticks with me. Rai has come the closest.)
I want to affirm the props given to Joelle Jones on Supergirl. I'm sure I'm late but I feel like she's been one of my favorite discoveries of the past year or two. (Think I first stumbled on her via Helheim?) Her Ladykiller book is gorgeous and I can't wait to see what she brings to Kara's world.
"… a well-made piece of hokum that falls apart the moment one looks away." - is perhaps the kindest compliment that any of Mark Millar's best work will ever deserve. It's how I would describe the stories of his that I actually did enjoy (to a point): Old Man Logan, Supercrooks, Huck, etc. That said, "hokum" alone is…
I completely agree that (all things considered) DC has a much more established history of what I'd consider true experimentation. I do wonder, though, what you make of Marvel releases like Vision, Moon Knight (Lemire and Ellis), Magneto, Squirrel Girl, etc. Seems like they're willing to take at least a few shots at…
I'm in a similar place. I'm willing to try monthlies/single issues on DC titles that seem interesting, and on plenty of indie titles. I'm done with Marvel single issues - Vision #12 was my last one, as I promised myself it would be - and I've shifted 100% to my Unlimited subscription, which is working out swimmingly…
I think that would be the opposite of progress. Fortunately, at least from my perspective, that's not actually what Tamaki did in the book. I mean, sure, you have a sixteen-year-old kid who feels (surprise) a bit alienated by nature of… being an alien, but that doesn't make her a simple copy of Clark. Most of the book…
This speaks to the near-impossibility of creating lists that please everybody (also: why would anyone ever do that?). AVC regulars are well aware of Vision and how singular it is, while more casual readers probably aren't, and so I see a certain argument that the book deserves yet more attention during "best of"…
You've summarized most of my feelings about the year too, or at least the year in Big Two comics. I think most people will forget (or just missed) the bright spots in the New 52, but I agree with your list. I think Rebirth has represented an improvement on certain key books (Wonder Woman being one of the leading…
I'm sure I can think of others if I put my mind to it, but one "discovery" I'm enjoying is the Bunn/Walta Magneto series from 2014 - I was aware of it but didn't actually try it until getting a Marvel Unlimited subscription this year. I think I appreciate Walta's style much more having read The Vision first - now the…
It's fascinating to hear you say that, because I'm a longtime Bat-fan and I'm deeply disappointed in the current state of the books. I've loved many eras of the character (Grant, O'Neil, Moench, Morrison, Snyder are all legends to me), but I don't see anything particularly remarkable about the current crop. King is a…
I've been trying to maintain a certain discipline - e.g. zero new Marvel single issues or trades since I started a Marvel Unlimited subscription. BUT I still binged on Image/Valiant/etc. trades during Comixology's Black Friday sales.
I think Detective may be a big one for me too, just based on the pretty universal praise for it around here. (I suppose the one I really want to check out above all, though, is Rucka's Wonder Woman). I'm sad to suggest that you save your money on The Flash - I was really rooting for that one but it just really hasn't…
Had the exact same experience - I think maybe Issue #5 was a little wobbly, so I sat out the first two-part story (#6-7) and then came back for the Otto Schmidt art in #8-9 and I'm fully on board again. All things considered, I think this might still be the best Rebirth title.
I'm rooting for both of those series - but I don't think either one of them is worth the single issue cover price. I finally started a Marvel Unlimited subscription several weeks ago, so I'm living with the six-month delay on new books, but I feel like my buck goes much further than before.
I had a somewhat similar reaction - I don't know if I'd call it ridiculous, but I just didn't come out of the finale feeling as though King had somehow stolen Virginia's agency or diminished her (at least in a cheap hack-y way). That said, I'm a white male, we all may have our blind spots, and it's possible that…
I was definitely feeling lukewarm about that first arc and decided to take a little Bat-break. It may take me a minute more.
