"work's intent needs to be self evident "
That is the definition of "death of the author." It's the concept that an author's background opinions etc. should have no bearing on how their work is interpreted, "a book is a machine that generates interpretations", the work should speak for itself.

"It leaves me with little hope for a better humanity."
