Eh, I think the world has changed around them and the leadership hasn’t caught up. Like, the casual racism and classism of the Weiss and Lipton tweets wouldn’t have even gotten flack in the ‘90s and probably would have only caused minor ripples in the ‘00s. Whereas now there is a big enough portion of their audience

No.

Am I the only one who thinks this is all a non-story? Look, nobody who supports Trump is going to give a shit and it ain’t gonna shock the ones that don’t support him. If Trump supporters didn’t get all morally indignant over “grab’em by the pussy”, they’re not going to get their panties in a bunch over an affair or

I also remember an interview where her mother was sitting behind the interviewer giving signals or something.

The tweet is mostly accurate.

Plus, she couldn’t skate! If figures had been required, Surya never would’ve even been close to a podium in her career.

Remember the weird adoption story they made up about her for no reason at all? They claimed she was from the island of Reunion, but really, she’d been born in France.

I’m not denying that there’s racism in skating, but she was very good and jumps and spins and that’s it. The girl couldn’t skate. Her footwork was terrible and her programs had little choreography. She was, essentially, a gymnast on ice. Which was very exciting to watch, but skating has two scores, and Surya badly

“People need to learn about figure skating before they comment on it” is my current motto. I’m trying reallllly hard not to get into fights with people on here and Twitter, but it’s so hard.

I kind of want to watch that movie again just for his performance, but ... I cannotttttt with the Kevin Costner fuckery. Maybe there’s a supercut on YouTube of *just* Rickman’s part?

This is an interesting hill to die on.

That would be a good analogy - I still hated doing school figures.

That is demonstrably false. According to Dvora (who knows more about gymnastics and skating than anyone), the flip was made illegal in 1976 when Surya was 3.

They were concerned for other skaters because she did it while crossing Midori Ito’s path(and invading her space) and missed her face by inches.

Thank God someone finally wrote an article rebutting all the Surya Bonaly truther-ism that pops up every four years. Now, if only you had gone on to point out that she created a lot of her own problems by physically bullying and endangering fellow competitors in practice sessions at major competitions including

The principal reason the backflip is banned is that kids were fucking them up and becoming quadriplegics.

That’s a good point. Another good point that the article failed to mention is the damage backflip does to the ice. Unlike axles, which have kind of a side-swiping, screwdiver effect on the ice, backflips take uneven chunks out of the surface. This creates a disadvantage for anyone performing after the backflipper.

Bring back skating the figures! God, that was so exquisitely boring to watch.

Shitty people can sometimes be charismatic and attract friendships easily. Cattral may be the type of person who either does not buy into it, or happened to be the easiest target. Some people approach group situations as a competition and will manufacture a common enemy in order to maintain control/be top dog. It’s
