Sad to hear this. I went to school with his daughters and so met him personally a couple of times. Middle school is when you start to be able to distinguish the genuinely decent adults from the fakers, and he seemed to be on the genuinely decent side.

Now playing

I always loved Melvin and Howard. A weird, quirky film.

I know opinions are mixed about the movie itself (and about a white man directing), but Demme captured amazing performances from Oprah, Thandie Newton, and Kimberly Elise in his adaptation of Toni Morrison’s Beloved.
He has directed a lot of women in some of their most memorable roles: Goldie Hawn and Christine Lahti

Silence of the Lambs, incidentally, is a deeply feminist film. I love this brief shot from near the beginning, which tells you basically everything you need to know about Clarice, the FBI, and the entire movie:

Sorry, but this movie happened over 20 years ago. It’s called Madonna: Innocence Lost. It was Fox’s attempt at doing a movie of the week. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you can catch it on the Lifetime Movie Network.

Who owns the music rights is always telling for how warts-and-all a musical bio-pic will be. If Madonna managed to negotiate getting the rights to her early work when she re-negotiated her contract later with Warner Music, she’ll never agree to let her music be used for anything less than a flattering portrait. If she

This sucks. I hate Ann Coulter, but I also hate how universities have become parodies of themselves as gated communities for liberals.

Berkeley’s reasoning isn’t that she doesn’t have the right to speak on campus. It’s that there is a legitimate public safety concern about her presence on campus, and the campus can’t guarantee her safety or the safety of her audience. In the event of a public safety concern, the government has the limited right to

I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an ass of yourself.

I think the students at Berkeley should stop letting the Republican club there bait them so easily. At this point everybody KNOWS that the only reason they keep booking these assholes is for the spectacle of it all. Ann Coulter just wants a chance to get free publicity to shill her books.

Milo was cancelled BECAUSE of protests. What don’t you get? Had there been no violent protesting, his speech would have go on without incident.

Wrong. I’m not sure what country you’re writing from, but in America, the right to speak freely in a public space is literally written into the constitution. They are violating her civil liberties if they remove her from the lawn.

No, they can’t. See: The Willard Preacher and a host of other people who speak freely on college campuses daily. You can only be removed if you are breaking the law or disturbing the peace. Disliking what she has to say doesn’t mean she is in violation of any law.

The Economist.

The Economist.

If you would like to educate yourself, there has been substantial research on the subject.

Yeah as an artist I can understand why the bull’s artist would be upset about the control he’s lost over how his work is perceived, but it’s also kinda great art that both the bull and the girl, and their relationship, are representing different things to different viewers and really emphasizing the loaded and

Nah, the bull is a tribute to the stock market, and the girl is advocating for more women on corporate boards so they can more equitably abuse their economic inferiors.

I agree. The Girl is purely corporate. and I’m not actually a fan of her original message. The idea of using a girl to represent women in the workplace misses the point in my opinion. Society more easily accepts a girl standing up to oppression than women.

Isn’t fearless girl some sort of corporate art, though? I don’t really care, but whatever. It’s bought and paid for, no? By a Wall Street firm trying to humanize themselves? Or do I misremember? I think Bull sculptor should let it go. I also don’t like fearless girl because I feel like I’m being manipulated. So, I’m a
