I think that's typical feature of german cars - my 86 Audi 100 also had it.

That's not a case anymore. European BMW can be manual but usually they are automatic these days. Just checked for used BMW X5 ads in biggest lithuanian car sales website - 425 automatics and only 13 manuals are available.
