I know it was a hyperbolic eyeroll, I just see stuff like this all the time. People talk about how money could have gone to other stuff when it comes to kickstarter when most people are just putting their money in for the rewards, essentially buying the thing.

Could that not also be said about every kickstarter ever, though? Or, really, any monetary transaction for something that people didn't need to survive? This wasn't a question of "Well you could help the homeless, or spice up your bookshelf". Money could be spent on anything, almost at any given time. It's versatile

Good god, so much of this comment thread is based off assuming that this book is cover to cover cannibal boning. Not that I would mind, or that those don't exist, but that's not what this is.
