NO what they realised is that if all the references were the same as the book the movies target market is old curmudgeons in their 40s and 50s while the key 14 - 35 demographic would be ignored. So they needed to make the references appeal to that group to ensure they see the film.

The book was seventies/eighties, the movie looks more like nineties/naughties with some eighties just in case.
My main issue with the book was that recognizing the reference didn’t matter as Cline explained it in agonising detail anyway.
