I don’t think it’s even a matter of liking the movie or not (i liked it). It’s just dumb that hollywood isn’t willing to risk hiring a director/write to come up with some kind of rivaled high-concept ORIGINAL idea for a film.
The Innkeepers was too much of a slow burn with no payoff. I didn’t hate it but it never really went anywhere. Definitely Wests’ weakest. I’d certainly put House of the Devil on this list, slow burn WITH the payoff..
THEM is easily at the top of my list. Funny Games is really good to.
For a directors first foray into horror, spot-on. It wasn’t the scariest movie I’ve ever seen but the music and atmosphere couldn’t have been better. It maintained the creep factor and never felt the need to fall back on jump-scares or gore to make up for anything.
