Money trumps guilt. If the money wasn’t coming in, the studio would stop working on it. Nobody on the dev team would ever pay out of pocket just because they felt like it was owed.
I read an article a while ago that Hello Games has a huge surge in sales every time they release a big content update, which also usually coincides with their 50% off sale. It’s a pretty small studio, so it must be enough for them to ‘keep the lights on’ at least.

The only way this game can be realistic is if all of the economic/production data given to the player is completely fabricated and over-inflated, but you don’t know by how much.
