Well, there’s the recording and the song itself. She owns the song - the lyrics, the melody, the arrangement, the harmony; the record company owns the recording. It’s a confusing mess, and this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Putting aside your unfounded dig at Beyonce, the record label owns the music because from the outset, the recording industry is a predatory one. It ‘invests’ in artists by inking deals that put all the power in their hands, i.e. Master and Publishing rights. That’s how you have artists like TLC and BSB sell millions…

Masters and Publishing rights are two different things. In any case, authors could still have their manuscript on file and can have a different publisher re-release their work. A musician cannot, because the record label owns the physical copy of the recording.

Just a radical idea - why do we even need gender to identify people? Even racial identity is problematic. When eyewitnesses accounts are largely unreliable, law enforcement need to rely on other (hopefully more reliable) methods to identify someone.
