I remember an article here ages ago about designer jeans and how it drew out a bunch of people justifying how they just couldn’t wear jeans that cost less than $200. Like, wear whatever you want, but I reserve the right to find it silly.

The South has always expected adult women to be more formally dressed until recently. Moms in the 80s were absolutely wearing aerobics wear in public. Perhaps you were too young to notice?
I very often wear pajamas to pick my daughter up from school, my look projects my philosophy of giving zero fucks☺
Yaaaaasss! You are my queen!
I think that it also projects that you are the kind of woman or wife that doesn’t have to have an office job. No way is my office going to tolerate me showing up in semi-sheer, skin tight leggings and tops with running shoes.
I felt so *embarrassed* to be wearing activewear when I stopped by the farmers market to buy a bag of oranges last saturday. I was actually on my way out to go on a hike. I just felt soooo douchey.
I’ve just moved to the states from the UK, and this is most definitely something that is far more prevalent here than back home. In the UK, you wear gym clothes ONLY to work out. Unless you’re very much in the not-working bracket, in which case you live solely in sweat pants (or jogging bottoms, as is more commonly…
I remember the 80s aerobics trend, but I don’t remember people wearing spandex and leotards to the grocery store or PTA meetings (at least not where I grew up in Louisiana). There was a very highly stylized gym “uniform”, but it was still limited to going to and from the gym and not everyday wear.
People wear athleisure because pajamas in public aren’t socially acceptable. It’s usually not a statement. It’s the most comfortable, easy care clothing you can get that’s considered acceptable for adults to wear.
Personally I loathed the yoga pants trend... Until I got pregnant and had a kid, and the idea of trying to squeeze my pregnant belly and expanding ass into the jeans I’d worn previously seemed cruel and pointless, as did buying a whole new set of pants just to wear while pregnant/post partum.
I am extremely amused by all the ultradefensive Mom monsters you have drawn out to defend their over-priced leggings.
Public transit is an exception to a point. Standing in line in the grocery store is not. There is absolutely no reason someone needs to be that close to me.
see a lot of these moms in storytime, too. we get it, your life is perfect and i am a lowly public servant dressed in a schmatta who’s only form of physical activity is readying a paper plate craft for your child.
I think it’s because these types of clothes are more prevalent in stores. Whatever is out there is what people will wear for the most part. Lululemon didn’t exist a while ago, and certainly places like TJ Maxx didn’t have the athletic clothes sections they have now. Personally, I think it’s awesome, that it’s…
Yeah, it’s weird when fashion trends become ubiquitous, or when you see groups of people all pretty much wearing identical outfits even though you know it’s not purposefully coordinated. It feels Stepford Wife-y, and I think there’s an element of that — a lot of people dress to fit in because it is one of the easiest…
Only if I can pick my butt with my other hand.
I go to the grocery store in yoga pants because I don't feel like putting on real pants. Of course, they are obviously cheap, old yoga pants from WalMart and they typically have some kind of child related stain on them. So I'm guessing no one is confusing me with the women you are talking about.
This feels like maybe an eensy weensy bit of projecting. Like maybe they dress that way because it makes them feel good or it’s easiest or they are simply conformist about clothing. And maybe they spent a lot of money or maybe they didn’t. Maybe they spend a lot on leggings but not on other things. Maybe they wish…
I’m a stay at home mom and I’ll tell you why I wear workout clothes every day.
