I would also think that the reason that sometimes the racism is less overt in the South is that the population of black people is higher down here, and when you see and talk to and work with someone every day, it gets harder to dehumanize them. That’s not a guaranteed thing though.

I’m going to remain a pessimist on this and expect nothing substantive to come out of these hearings. So I’m either right, or I’m pleasantly surprised.
