the issue i have is DIRECT sunlight. seemingly every plant i want says "direct sunlight needed 20 hours a day." (exaggeration for you take life to serious's) My apartment gets sunlight just fine but not a whole lot of DIRECT sunlight. Any suggestions on good plants?

While i agree with you there is almost no congruency, different authors, different opinions. Guessing what a dead guy would like and dislike aesthetically would definitely bring up differences.

Have other people seriously had that much trouble just keeping it on. The FEW times they've asked me to turn it off i said "O ok no problem" they turn around and start walking away and i do nothing...
