I imagine they are relying on people being able to pull the thing away from their faces at any time. None of the official kits appear to have straps to stay on your face the entire time. Although some people, like myself, will likely buy a third party full faced strap kit to wear it for hours at a time.

I imagine a good chunk of the mark up is getting new parts from LEGO themselves, and they tend to charge a premium on pick-a-brick pieces and etc.
