The only thing I have to ask is... who the hell washes cast iron? I just deglaze mine by hitting it while it’s still hot with some water, then wipe it down with kosher salt, vegetable oil, and a paper towel. You only actually need to wash them if there’s something that combo doesn’t take off, which is exceedingly rare.

Nah. Stuff like this gets the attention simply because of the novelty of it all. Like any user created content, there’s a whole range of stuff. Some of it is really good. A lot of it is not.
Moist climate, I take it. If you want to purposely “stale” your bread (for example, to make one of these recipes), turning your oven to its lowest setting and putting your bread in there for an hour or two will do it.
