I guess I'm not surprised. They need to get rid of that awful Sense UI (which seems to be the cause of many problems for power Android users), make fewer but higher quality phones, and do a better job at marketing. Things change so quickly in mobile tech but I hope HTC sticks around, as I wouldn't be too thrilled…
They're getting a little carried away with being "thinnest". After computers get to the 1" mark (and phones 10mm), I don't care about how much thinner you can get the thing. I'm more interested in battery life and lightness at that point.

I think it's been a half hearted effort on Google's part so far, like many of their products. This, and Chromebooks, are a couple of significant projects which come to mind that haven't exactly lived up to expectations.
