It's not just about the author speaking directly through the characters. It's such a poor payoff of a joke because there's nothing more than a character saying something. When South Park does this well, it's usually done through literary irony or a number of other different ways. Look no further than the Redskins…
It's lazy writing, though, and yes, it's a constant crutch that South Park leans on, and it's very tiring to watch an episode full of those moments.
I'd hardly call the formula of "the idiot of the duo says something that parrots the author's POV and is simply dismissed by the overbearing sidekick" as "erudite". It's probably one of the most tired satire cliches.

Stan Lee really oughta be filming random cameos on a green screen that Marvel can just edit into any future movies.
I got disillusioned during an episode where Daria is reading the Iliad, and Quinn comes up to her and asks what she's reading, and then asks her if there are any horses in it, to which Daria replies, "in fact, there's a great big one."
I don't think he was wrong. It's a shame he hasn't been able to make good music once he actually got to the future, though.

I'm guilty of making some kind of "fine girl" joke every time I meet a girl named "Brandy".
Are you trying to say that math isn't fun?? That's one of the most preposterous things I've heard all day!
Correction: there's a nearly 1 in 10 chance of getting a "botch" when disadvantaged. (Technically, 39/400.)
What made it WoW-like was giving your class a very limited amount of abilities (your WoW toolbar, 1-9), and focusing on splitting abilities between stuff you can do every turn (right-click), stuff you can do every so often (your lower cooldowns), stuff you can do every fight (your 1-5min cooldowns), and stuff you can…
C'mon man, everyone knows what a botch is ;)
Real players used the pamphlet handouts from Gary Gygax himself.
Fun fact! Doing the math, the expected value of a "disadvantaged" roll is 7.7. The expected value of an "advantaged" roll is 13.875. Compare this to the expected value of a normal d20 roll, which is 10.5.
Does anyone else remember Joel's failed Web 1.0 project that used the Gizmonics name and involved a virtual ant farm, and each section of the site had an "ant" working on it, and you could click the ant to encourage it in its task?
Oh look, a dotted trail showing where rabid wolves have chased little Billy!
