Im amazed that people are amazed. There are ~1700 train derailments per year in the US. That’s a little more than four per day, and rail accidents have been on the decline every year since 2015.

IMO, they should completely overhaul that part of the system and ditch the gas tax entirely. Charge each registering vehicle per mile driven based on weight, regardless of ICE, hybrid, or EV. The only hurdle I see is out-of-state miles where ICE/hybrids would be taxed twice but that’s mostly an issue with big trucks.

Many people don’t want a vehicle from the German manufacturers. I know their ads touted “German engineering” but we should know by now that their engineering is actually crap as evidenced by poor reliability and very high maintenance costs.
