I’ve just realized how jaded I’ve become. I fully expected him to get off. Bit of an understatement to say I’m pleasantly surprised.

Oh yeah, I think we definitely agree on the content of all of this, I just think there’s some kind of disagreement about framing here.
Like, I don’t think “society forces men to follow bullshit arbitrary rules” is a non-feminist way of framing the issue. I think that’s a perfectly feminist way of putting it. And I…
I kind of don’t get who could lead the discussion on toxic masculinity if not feminists. Both concepts are rooted in the idea that gender is socially constructed and performed, and that for various structural reasons people are pushed to perform unpleasant or actively harmful behaviors. So I feel like if you realize…
You have a bone to pick with feminists because they’re talking about something men won’t? If feminists are leading the talks it’s because most men are keeping silent.
Except it isn’t. The only reason to be offended is if it applies to you, and if it does, then you need to make some changes.
It’s really disingenuous when they complain about how men do all the most dangerous jobs, but then also fight against women getting a chance at those jobs.
I also have a (minor) bone to pick with feminists about how they seem to be leading most of the discussion on toxic masculinity and how I think that’s somewhat counterproductive...
The problem is, the guys who want to talk about masculinity the most are all MRA guys and they aren’t interested in discussing any changes.
Terry Crews is a goddamn national treasure. This is just more evidence supporting that fact.
It’s going to take a lot more guys like him speaking out about this shit before the insecure among us can give up their posturing. Good for him and great for the rest of us if he can get more men to take a look at themselves.
They seem to parody masculinity a lot. Did you not get that?
Those ads strike me as pretty apolitical and absurd, but if anything, I’d think that those commercials do the opposite, since they bring in all the trappings of classically masculine ads, but then make it ridiculous.
if i may share....
Except they don’t?
It’s a shame Terry is getting so much shit, because he’s absolutely right. And especially the part about “men are bad;” we don’t react the right way to that at all. Like why can’t we just own it? We are, but why do we have to go on the defensive when we have an opportunity to examine ourselves and be better?
Those commercials are more absurd than anything. However, being masculine isn’t necessarily toxic. Just because he’s a big guy with muscles doesn’t mean he’s encouraging people to treat women badly.
Masculinity in our culture has always been insecurity masquerading as strength. That’s probably why it’s been so damaging. Almost all the evil in our history has resulted from insecure people lashing out at the world.
Funny thing is... the whole Alpha male thing is a myth, based upon a debunked and defunct scientific theory.
Oh I’m sure this will go over well.
