Like I said, this was one of those rare Broadchurch S1 situations where Chibs musters every meager drop of talent he’s got and manages to puke out a slightly-less-dismal-than-usual script (and if you can avoid thinking about it AT ALL, it even rises to “good”) and hand it to an outstanding director, editor, etc. IMHO

And they had to avoid Feb. because isn’t there an X-Men movie then? Albeit a delayed one with terrible word-of-mouth, but still....

My understanding is that MNS funded this (and all his other recent ones) himself, so he may have total control over the release date himself as well. (Presumably Universal is just distributing?) If I were self-funding, I’d sure aim for January too. It worked for Split. And it’s a dead zone ripe for the picking.

Given that Chibnall is the one who wrote a lot of those disappointing Torchwood episodes featuring Miserable Captain Jack instead of the original Fun Captain Jack from season 1 of DW, I wouldn’t count on any return of Captain Jack ever being anything but disappointing as long as this bozo is still the showrunner. :(

The TARDIS Eruditorum review wisely points out that although James wasn’t needed for the plot, he *was* needed for the tone of the episode. He keeps it from being too monochromatic and... muddy.

I’m not too clear on the specifics but apparently it’s extremely difficult to do that in the UK, contractually speaking. Keep in mind that The Crown is one of the most expensive TV shows ever made. The BBC doesn’t have those geysers of Netflix money.

I think Chibnall wanted to get rid of a lot of the previous staff (all of the previous staff?) and give a lot of new people a try behind the scenes, but they really needed some “transition” staff to stick around and help show
