it’s funny that websites like this (and say, pitchfork for example) used to exist as an alternative to this kind of write-up, because there were mainstream pop culture news sources that tracked this stuff, and you’d come here for the left-of-center, off-kilter, interesting stuff.

Isn’t portraying something you’re not the whole point of acting? If a straight person can pull off gay and vice versa then why not take the person who best read for the part?
